Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began their lives as independent comic-book characters. They later traded in their edge for mainstream movies, kiddie cartoons, and mass marketing to five-year-olds.

Dave Sim's Cerebus the Aardvark remained steadfastly independent. Indeed, over time, the character became
less accessible, as adventures gave way to Sim's bizarre flourishes and problematic political and theological views.
In 1987, before their divergent paths made such an encounter impossible, the Turtles and the Aardvark met. The story, found in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Book III,  follows the familiar pattern: heroes meet, heroes misunderstand and fight, heroes join together against a common enemy.
