Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began their lives as independent comic-book characters. They later traded in their edge for mainstream movies, kiddie cartoons, and mass marketing to five-year-olds. Dave Sim's Cerebus the Aardvark remained steadfastly independent. Indeed, over time, the character became less accessible, as adventures gave way to Sim's bizarre flourishes and problematic political and theological views. |

In 1987, before their divergent paths made such an encounter impossible, the Turtles and the Aardvark met. The story, found in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Book III, follows the familiar pattern: heroes meet, heroes misunderstand and fight, heroes join together against a common enemy. |
